Herstat formulation includes white soft paraffin (petrolatum) as its main ingredient, and several other substances (known as excipients).
Propolis is a natural substance collected by honeybees alongside nectar and pollen, which the bees use to sanitise and sterilise their hives and colonies and keep them free of viruses and infections. Propolis possesses a great many qualities including being an antiviral, an anti-inflammatory and a natural sterilant and has been used since the time of the Ancient Egyptians for medicinal purposes to treat a plethora of ailments.
Propolis is still used for medicinal purposes today and this natural antimicrobial substance is commonly used to fight infections, boost the immune system and treat injuries to the skin, such as open wounds. Our unique brand of propolis (Propolis ACF) comes from a sustainable source situated in Canada. Its antimicrobial and antioxidant qualities assist in preserving the ointment.
Because this ingredient is collected mainly from poplar tree resins, by bees which are free to fly wherever they like, we regularly check the quality of the substance, ensuring that is remains free from impurities such as heavy metals, pesticides and any other microbiological contamination. The resulting propolis extract meets both food grade and pharmaceutical quality standards.
White soft paraffin
This is the main ingredient in Herstat's cold sore ointment, making up 89.5% of the finished product. It acts as an emollient and barrier, softening the skin and keeping the wound moisturised - a critical factor in accelerating healing - and might also protect the cold sore from secondary infections.
The NHS states that emollients help skin to retain water, ease itching, reduce scaling, and soften cracks.
White soft paraffin was chosen as the main ingredient since the barrier effect it provides helps the skin retain moisture and a moist environment has been proven to promote better and faster healing in skin wounds.
This beneficial ingredient additionally helps to reduce pain by keeping the skin supple in the affected area and can reduce the urge to scratch or pick at the cold sore and surrounding irritated skin, therefore helping to speed healing time and reduce discomfort in this way too.
This ingredient, which accounts for 5% of the ointment, is a transparent, odourless mineral oil known to have been used for treatment purposes as early as 400 BC. Just like the white soft paraffin, it also acts as an emollient in Herstat, but because it is a liquid, it allows the cold sore ointment to be better dispersed over the area in need of care.
Ethanol is a solvent produced by fermentation and is used in many pharmaceutical products, as well as in a large number of cosmetics. Because Herstat is an ointment (oil-based) and not a cream (water-based), it creates a water-resistant barrier useful for trapping moisture and promoting healing when a cream would not. However, the lack of water means that ethanol is required to keep all of the ingredients in the ointment dissolved and more easily absorbed by the skin.
Wool fat – or lanolin – is an emollient that's been extracted from wool. Accounting for 1% of our product, this fatty substance is produced by sheep to protect their fleece from water and works well in ointments as it is readily absorbed by the skin. In Herstat, it helps to create a protective barrier around the cold sore, keeping the skin moisturised and supple, and also soothes itching.
