Healthcare in America is certainly quite different from UK healthcare. Nevertheless, a recent report from the USA has still caught our attention. It centres around a man called Jim, who visited Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire, USA for an intestinal issue.
During his six-day stay at the hospital, he decided to ask the doctor about his cold sore and get treatment. He was given a small tube of cream for his outbreak.
After having left the hospital he received a bill. It was for $21,044 (about £12,400), and $3,766 (about £2,219) of that was for the five gram tube of cold sore cream.*
After being questioned by Jim, a hospital representative stated, “On average we believe Wentworth-Douglass Hospital's overall charge structure is comparable with similar sized hospitals in our region."
